Today (January 2nd) is my Mom's birthday. She had mentioned a few years ago that she'd like one of these hanging cases that she had seen in a catalog. At some point I ended up finding a Kwik Sew pattern to make one. After procrastinating for a few years, I finally made her one yesterday. She wears a lot of floral print shirts, so I thought this print would fit in well in her closet. I already had the fabric in my stash, so I'm giving myself bonus points for not running to the store to find something I thought she'd like! I'm usually really bad about doing that!

After finishing the hanging case, I decided to keep up my momentum. I've had 6 or 7 fabrics to make pillowcases for my kids and my nieces and nephews for probably 3 years now. I dug it out and made my first of the pillowcases. It's Christmasy, so I'll have to wait until December to gift it, but it was fun to see it finished and to check another stash project off of my list. Be prepared for more pillowcase pictures in the near future!

Our Christmas vacation is coming to an end. We start homeschooling again on Monday. I've enjoyed the time off to just relax with the kids, but I'm also looking forward to getting things back to normal. I just wish there were more hours in the day. I spend my time on school, housework & cooking, so I don't have as much time to sew as I'd like. I hope that changes at least a little bit this year.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14686579480283951489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1951378499639543572.post-55044554597904619522015-01-02T09:55:00.001-07:002015-01-02T09:55:38.786-07:00Happy New Year! Time to Recap 2014's Projects!I haven't blogged in almost a year and I figured a new year was a good excuse to start up again. 2014 ended up being a really busy year and I hardly sewed anything after finishing my fair entries in August. I wanted to make a list of the things I finished this year and figured this is a great place to do that!

The year started off with this Rock Candy quilt for my Mom on her birthday. It's made using Kona solids in their "Sunset" line with Kona lavender as the background.

After making a Rock Candy for my Mom, I decided that I needed one for myself. This is the one I envisioned when I bought the pattern, an ombre in pink for Valentine's Day.

I made this mini for an online quilt swap. The solids I used were textured solids. I had never worked with them before and I love the look they gave the quilt. I came up with this pattern when I couldn't find one I liked for the fabrics I had chosen.

I sewed 4 pillows to use on my couch, in hopes of brightening things up during the cold, dark months of January & February. I used the fabric line "Summer Breeze" along with a variety of solids from Kona and Moda.

I was inspired in late spring to make another version of the Rock Candy quilt. I made one for me and one for my Mom, with a slight change in fabric layout.

I sewed this charity quilt at my annual quilt retreat in Nebraska in April. It was donated to an organization in Africa through my aunt's church in North Carolina.

This quilt was sent to the same charity.

A finished picture of the Rock Candy I made for Mom.

I made these doll pajamas for my daughter's 18" doll. I entered them in the local fair and won a first place ribbon!

These pajamas were made for my nephew for his 13th birthday. I have made him more pairs of pajamas than I can count in his life, but this was the first pair I had given him in a long time.

This nightgown was for my daughter. She has 2 brothers, so cars have always been a big part of her life. I was thrilled to find this girly car print knit fabric a few years ago.

I quilted this Valentine's panel. It has more quilting on it than any quilt I had made before. It won a 2nd place ribbon at the fair.

This is my favorite accomplishment this year! I sewed this tiny baby outfit and entered it in the fair. It won Best in Class for the infants division!

I entered one of my favorite bibs I've ever made and it won a blue ribbon.

This was a last minute fair entry. I've always wanted a sewing apron, so I made one and it also won a blue ribbon!

My plastic bags were out of control, so I made a holder for them. I just love this orange floral fabric.

This is a "Lots of Pockets Tote" (by Michelle Patterns). Aqua is my favorite color and I just love it in this gray pattern. This bag also won a blue ribbon at the fair.

This is a divided basket (pattern by Noodlehead) that also won a blue ribbon.

I made these boxy pouches in the last days before we left on vacation in September. Each kid loved having a place for their own toothbrushes & things.

In September & October, I helped teach a crochet class to 5th and 6th grade girls at our homeschool co-op. As an end of class gift, I made each of the girls their own water bottle cozy. They were a big hit and I think each of them got a color they liked.

This was probably my most tedious project of 2014. I remember making a Christmas ornament this way when I was a kid, but I didn't remember it being such a chore! I had intended on making more than one of these, but one was enough. I do love how it sparkled in the Christmas lights, though. Maybe I'll make another one next year. Maybe....

This Frozen tote bag was a gift for my daughter's friend on her 8th birthday. She (like most girls) loves Frozen. We even found out when we got to her party that the party was "Frozen" themed. Our gift fit right in! I didn't see her open it, but my daughter said she loved it.

I sewed pajama pants for my 3 teenage niece & nephews for Christmas, but I forgot to take of picture of them before I gifted them. They were all I managed for handmade gifts this year. I'm hoping to do better for Christmas 2015.
Thank you for looking through my project recap of 2014. Here's to 2015 being a much more productive year! I've joined in the the group that is sewing through their stash in 2015. Check out the hashtag #SewMyStash2015 to see my projects and lots of others.Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14686579480283951489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1951378499639543572.post-77541270574207354952014-02-28T13:28:00.000-07:002014-02-28T13:28:38.153-07:00Sewing, But Not BloggingI can't believe that February is over and I have yet to blog this month! I've finished a few projects, but I haven't had nearly as much time to sew as I would like. If you are a homeschool mom, or know someone who homeschools, you probably know that February is one of the hardest months of the year. February is always our worst month and it tempts me to throw in the towel. It doesn't help that most of the private schools around here start enrolling next week for the fall semester.

We're plugging away, hoping that spring will come and relieve our winter blues. March is coming in like a lion, though, with a winter weather advisory for this weekend. We are expecting anywhere from 5" to 12" depending on which weather report you read. I guess spring will have to wait for now!

On to the sewing! I finished one of my very favorite quilts this month. It's one I'm keeping for myself and I love how it turned out! I went out of my comfort zone and quilted feather circles on this quilt. I traced a stencil onto the quilt top, then basted and quilted it. It turned out pretty well for my first time. It's so hard for me to control a quilt well enough to do complicated stitching, even with my Janome 6600 and it's larger harp space. Just when I thought I was doing well with free motion quilting, I find something new I need to practice! The quilting journey never ends, does it?

I also finished 4 pillow covers for my living room. My house is decorated with a lot of earth tones, so this chevron from Hobby Lobby was a perfect match. These pillows are 20"x20", plenty big for the kids to use to build forts and jump into like a pile of leaves.

One of my oldest UFOs saw the light of day this month! I started this Swing Bag (pattern by Amy Butler) for my Mom more than 3 years ago. It is reversible and the other side is a dark blue denim. I took this pic in a hurry before my Mom left with the bag. She loved it and I'm glad I was able to mark it off of my list!

My final finish was a doll quilt for an online swap. A website I'm a member of does these swaps 4 times per year, once per season. Most of us involved use them as wall hangings, so we stick to more grown-up fabrics & themes. I used textured fabrics for the first time on this one and it was an adventure! All of the solids are textured, while the print is regular quilting cotton. The quilter who received it seemed happy with it, so I'm so glad she liked it! I received the one she made in return and it's beautiful!

I'm hoping big things will happen in March! Maybe I will blog more. Maybe spring will show up? Maybe I'll finish a few more UFOs. We'll see how productive I am. I will spend a good amount of time cutting fabric and packing up a couple of quilts into kits for a quilting retreat I'm going to in April. I leave on April 1st, so I have a lot to get done in the next 31 days! I hope March is very productive for all of you and may spring come soon for all of us!

Here's a sneak peek at 2 of my projects in planning!
I Quilted!I know I'm a little bit late in my celebration of the New Year, but I wanted to say it anyway. I hope 2014 is treating you all well so far!

We have had a whirlwind of a month! My sister, her husband & their 3 kids, who had always lived within an hour of us, left for 6 months of Spanish immersion language school in Costa Rica on January 15. It's been strange and emotional knowing that they are so far away and we anxiously await their return in early July. We are so thankful for Skype and Facetime! It makes the distance not seem so bad.

I had a finish done for 2014 on January 2nd! That's my Mom's birthday and I made her a table runner for her buffet that she had requested. I was in such a hurry to wrap it that I forgot to take a picture of it! Thankfully she lives just a few blocks away and I will be able to get a picture of it soon.

This week has been very productive! I got the "Rock Candy" pattern by Jaybird Quilts, along with the Sidekick ruler that the pattern uses and went to work. I was in the middle of fabric selection (Kona Sunset charms) for the first one when my Mom stopped over and commented on how she would "love one of those" using the fabrics shown on the front cover. She is not a big fan of black, so she requested one of the lighter colors as the background. I chose Kona in lavender because it matched and I had enough on hand. She hasn't seen it yet, but I have a feeling she's going to love it!

When I bought this pattern, I had envisioned it with just 3 colors, in an ombre-like pattern. I found these Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids at my LQS and they were exactly what I was looking for! I paired them with Kona in white and I finished the binding just this morning. I love how this turned out and it will really help brighten my house, which looks very bare after taking down all of our Christmas decorations.

I love how different a pattern can look by just changing the fabrics used. I can't say enough about how wonderful Jaybird Quilts is in her pattern design. I had never worked with diamonds before and both of these went together easily and without a lot of puckering. Most of my seams even match! I've been a big fan of Jaybird Quilts for a long time and I can't wait to see what she will come up with in the future! I saw that she is introducing a line of mini patterns and I will definitely be trying those!

This is a rough time of year for (most) homeschoolers, thanks to cabin fever and the slowing down of life after the holidays. I'm trying to pass the time with a lot of fabric, sewing and designing. I can only hope February will go as fast as January has!
I received a thread sampler and a Michael Miller Cotton Couture color card in my stocking, so I'm a very happy girl! I hope Santa left something "quilty" in your stocking this year.

I've decided that I need to do a "year in review" post today to celebrate all that I've accomplished in sewing & quilting this year. At times I don't feel like I've accomplished much, but then I look through the pictures on my computer and I'm surprised at how many sewing-related pictures I find. It's interesting to see how I sew in spurts, when I finished absolutely nothing in some months and blocks and quilts like crazy in other months. I think my goal for 2014 should be to be more consistent in finishing projects!

Presenting.......my 2013 in completed sewing projects!
I have been working hard on homeschooling, getting things ready for Christmas, and trying to finish up a few more UFOs for my LQS's contest.

The lighting in the pictures of these first two quilts is horrible and I apologize for that! These short days are making picture taking so difficult! The shadows were not working in my favor yesterday and I couldn't lay them on the ground because all of our snow had melted and I didn't want to lay them on the muddy grass. I won't have that problem any more for a while because we got 6 inches of snow today! I am excited to have a white Christmas. Christmases aren't supposed to be brown when you live in South Dakota!

Anyway, on to the sewing. This first quilt was made using the Charming Stars pattern at Moda Bake Shop. The fabric is a 3 or 4 year old line from Moda called "Lovely" by my favorite designer, Sandy Gervais. I love how happy the colors are in this fabric!

This quilt is very special to me. I won this fabric ("Cuzco" by Kate Spain) from Kate Spain herself in a blog giveaway about 18 months ago. I wasn't so sure I liked the colors in the fabric when I started, but it has really grown on me! It's such a bright, happy quilt and I'm sure my kids will be fighting over it soon enough. The pattern I used is "Jellybean" by Thimble Blossoms. Love Camille Roskelley!

And finally I decided that I needed a break from quilting, so I thought I'd make a fabric basket for a Christmas gift. I used an online tutorial that I can't find the link for at the moment. (I will add it if I find it.) These were very easy to make, except for making my own templates. I've never been great at that and this time was no exception. Despite measuring everything twice, my inner and outer didn't match up on the first basket. I fixed the problem somewhat on the second basket, but it still didn't match up like I'd hoped. For this one, I used "Noteworthy" fabric by Sweetwater and the basket is a size medium, which is about 7" square. I interfaced it according to the tutorial directions using a stiff iron-on interfacing on the lining and I'm not happy at all with how flimsy it is. I really have no idea what I'll do with it. It will most likely end up being a scrap basket.

This basket is my second try. It is a size small (~6" square) and is made from "Honky Tonk" fabric by Eric & Julie Comstock of Cosmo Cricket. I used fusible fleece on the exterior fabric of this one and I like it so much more! This one is for my Grandpa for Christmas. I knew I had to make something for him when I saw this fabric. Grandpa is 91 years old and has been a long-time fan of Louis L'Amour western novels. This fabric has a western flair, plus little cacti to remind him of the many years that he wintered in Arizona. I hope he likes it. I know he will like what I put in it! He has quite a sweet tooth and I plan to put his favorite candy in it - Butterscotches!

I also have some of this mustache print set aside. I'm not sure what I will make from it yet, but it will probably be for Grandpa. He would appreciate the humor in the "western" style mustaches.
My BFF's birthday was this past Saturday and this was one of her gifts. I wanted to show it last Friday, but I didn't want to spoil the surprise! This table runner was a kit I bought from Connecting Threads. It was fairly easy to put together, but the applique and embroidery took me a lot longer than I thought it would. I tend to be a procrastinator when working on a deadline, and procrastination does not mesh well with hand embroidery! But, in the end, I got it done and even got it mailed to my friend in enough time to have it arrive on her birthday.

It is being held by my adorable 5 year old son, so please excuse the not-at-all-professional pics.
I have 3 quilts basted and waiting to be quilted, plus 3 other projects in various stages of piecing, so I hope to have a post full of finished quilts soon!
Since the blizzard, my laptop screen decided to go on the fritz after only owning it for 5 months, we've had a few days when homeschooling was a real challenge, and my youngest son turned 5. I'm hoping the next few weeks will go a little more smoothly! At least I hope there won't be any more blizzards for a while, and I hope hp did a good job fixing my laptop screen. So far, so good.

I managed to finish 3 quilts amongst the craziness. All 3 of these were in pieces mid-September and I've managed to finishing piecing them, get them quilted & bound, and even get one of them mailed to the family I had intended to finish it for last year. More on that later.

The first quilt I finished is from a Moda Bake Shop pattern called Auntie's Diamonds. I loved this pattern as soon as I saw it and knew that it would be perfect for a layer cake I had in my stash. The fabric is "Flirt" by Sandy Gervais. She is my all-time favorite fabric designer and she rarely designs a fabric line that I don't love. Flirt is my favorite line that she has done that wasn't fall-related. She designs the most beautiful fall fabric ever! I paired her fabric with a Kona solid and I really love the contrast it gives.

My next finish was a quilt that I started for myself during the NFL football season last fall. I had always wanted to try a chevron quilt and I wasn't sure how it would turn out, so I decided to make it for me. That way, if it didn't turn out, I could still use it and enjoy it. I used the method of sewing 2 strips together and cutting them into squares, then alternating the squares on the diagonal to create the chevron. I figured it would be easier than making a whole bunch of half-square triangles & trying to get them to line up! I love how it turned out and I love the back just as much. The Broncos are having an awesome season & this is the perfect quilt to snuggle under while watching them play!

This last finish was the hardest quilt I have ever finished. Emotionally that is. I started this quilt last October with the intention of getting it done in a hurry for a woman I had "known" online for several years. She had been battling rectal cancer for 3 years and we knew that it was spreading and her time was getting short. I wanted to get this quilt done for her, but the cancer moved faster than we all imagined it would and she passed away in early November. She was just 36 years old and she left behind a husband and 2 young children. (Who just happen to be the same ages as my oldest 2 kids.)

After she passed, I couldn't bear to work on the quilt any more, so I stuffed it in a box and threw it in the closet. Our LQS is having a UFO contest this year and I wrote down this quilt as a UFO, not knowing if I would ever finish it. As I remembered this friend and was thinking about the anniversary of her passing coming, I decided to pull the quilt out. I contemplated donating the completed blocks to the local guild and just forgetting about it. But, I didn't. I decided to finish it and mail it to a friend of hers, who would gift it to her husband and children for me. I finished it last week and it was received by her family just this past Wednesday. I am glad to have it done, but I am even more glad that her family can have a soft & snuggly quilt in remembrance of their mom/wife. I still miss her, even though we never met in person. I hope the quilt will bring comfort to her family for many years to come!

We got somewhere in the realm of 3 feet of snow, with winds gusting to 70 mph on Friday night into Saturday morning. It was chilly in our house, but we survived with a new appreciation for electricity & heat!

Here is the view from our back door. The snow was drifting over our 4' fence and we had drifts back there up to 7' tall!

I had one finish this week. It's a doll/wall quilt for an online swap. The theme for this swap was triangles, so I used the Candy Dish pillow pattern from Jaybird Quilts and added a strip to each end to make it a little bit longer. I love how it turned out! I hope the recipient loves it, too! I used Kona in Ash for the background and Cotton Couture solids by Michael Miller for the triangles. It was my first time using Cotton Couture and they are very soft!
Everything in our town was closed Friday, Saturday & today, and it sounds like most things will be closed tomorrow as well. A school snow day hopefully means a quilting day for me!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14686579480283951489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1951378499639543572.post-6179812222536920722013-09-27T09:55:00.001-06:002013-09-27T09:55:20.055-06:00Finish It Up!My post will be brief today. The annual fall cold has attacked our house and 4 of us our sick. So far only my 4 year old has been safe from the germs. I just came down with it yesterday, so I still had some time to quilt this week.

I finished 2 of my UFOs! I am so happy to have these done. I have one more from the pile that I showed last week ready for binding. The binding is even made, but the sickness has kept me from the machine. Hopefully this cold is short lived!

My first finished UFO is for my husband. I started this in (I think) 2009 with the intention that it would be his Christmas present. He finally got it on Wednesday night! 3 years, 9 months after I was supposed to have it done. I guess my "time to complete a quilt" is running over 3 years! Yikes!

I am probably the most proud of this UFO! It is my oldest one! I believe I started it in the spring of 2005. My Mom loves bunnies and I wanted to give this to her to put on her Easter table. She might be able to use it this Easter! Just 9 years after I was planning to give it to her! Having this done should really lower my "time to completion" rate!

(This second pic shows the true colors.)

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. We are finally experiencing fall temperatures here in western South Dakota, with highs in the 60s & lows in the 40s. I love this time of year with the trees changing colors! Hopefully it will last for a while before the snow flies. Winter can wait a bit!

I'm working on finishing 4 quilts simultaneously for the UFO program at my local quilt store. I have made so many tops and never took the time to quilt them, so I'm hoping to get them done by the end of the month.

Here they are. The four tops that have captured my attention this month. These are all sandwiched for quilting. The top quilt in greens was originally started for a woman I met online who had battled metastatic rectal cancer for nearly 3 years. She passed away quickly last fall (at the far too young age of 35) and I wasn't able to finish it in time. I've decided that now is the time to finish it and hopefully give it to her family, which includes 2 children under the age of 9. I'll make sure to post a picture of it when it is finished.

The Broncos quilt is for me! I have been a crazy Denver Broncos fan for 25 years and last year I decided that I needed a Broncos quilt to snuggle with on game day. I'm finally finishing it to use this season. The fabric showing in the picture is the back. You'll have to wait & see what the front looks like!

The aqua, red & gray quilt is made using "Flirt" by Sandy Gervais. The side you're seeing is the back. I'll be showing you this one next week because it is quilted and just needs binding. I'm excited to get it done!

The red & black quilt is one of my oldest UFOs. I believe I bought it in 2009 with the intention of making it as a Christmas gift for my husband, whose favorite colors are red & black. It came as a kit from Connecting Threads. I love their kits! They provide plenty of fabric, which is not usually the case in kits I've purchased. The back of this one is black minkee and it is about half quilted. I'm quilting it with red thread and it is turning out awesome. Hopefully I'll be showing you this one next week, too!

Life has been very busy for us lately, so sewing has had to wait in the background. We have completed 5 weeks of homeschooling already and yesterday we had our first day of homeschool co-op. We are so blessed to be party of a large homeschooling community! I am a teacher's assistant in 4-year-old preschool and Hands On Science for 3rd & 4th graders. It's fun to be with other students and to see how other kids learn. We have co-op once a week and we are already excited about next week!

We had a surprise this morning for this early in the season - FROST! I couldn't believe it. We are usually warned in the weather forecast about the possibility of frost, but there wasn't any mention of it this time. We woke up this morning and there it was! I keep hearing that we're going to have a colder, snowier winter this year and I wonder how true that is. An early frost certainly points that way! You would never know that it was 93* at mid-day on Wednesday! Crazy. From 93* to 32* in less than 48 hours. I sure hope we get to experience more fall-like temperatures before it goes straight from summer to winter! Our temp today is a fall-like 70*. I can handle that!

I'm linking up today to Finish It Up Friday at Crazy Mom Quilts! Head on over there & see what everyone else has finished this week!

I have been so busy these past few weeks! There just hasn't been time to sit at the sewing machine! We started our 3rd year of homeschooling on August 19th and I'm teaching 4th & 2nd grades this year, along with a bit of preschool for my 4 year old. We had a garage sale with my parents & my sister on August 23rd & 24th. I forgot how much work prepping for a yard sale can be! It ended up being the hottest weekend of the summer, so we weren't as busy as we would've hoped. We did sell some stuff, though, so I still came home with a lot less stuff than I had taken!

It has all been a whirlwind and I can't believe that it's almost September! I'm sad to see summer go in some ways, but I am anxiously waiting for cooler temps and the leaves to start changing colors. It has been in the mid-90*s and even as hot as 100* for the past week or so. The public schools have let out at 1 pm each day this week because almost half of the schools do not have air conditioning. It has left us all ready for our normal temps to return. Hopefully that will be soon!

I picked up my fair entries on August 25th (also shown in my previous post) and I wanted to share the ribbons I won! It was a good experience again this year. I always look forward to reading the judges comments. They give me little things to work on as I prepare to start quilts for next year's fair.
I have a long list of quilts that I'd like to finish before the year is over, but time is passing by so quickly that I don't know when it will all get done. Our local quilt store is still running their UFO contest and, while I've finished quite a few things, I still have a lot on my list that has to be finished by a couple of days after Christmas for it to count as part of the contest. I need to stop looking at quilting tutorials online and focus on the projects I've already started. It's so hard with all of the new fabrics & patterns coming out! I'm also now 12 or 15 blocks behind on the Tula Pink City Sampler Quilt Along. I need to get busy, busy, busy!!
Thanks for stopping by! This summer has gone so incredibly fast! My kids had a blast playing outside and my 4 year old needed way more supervision than I thought he would! He's a houdini who can disappear in moments. I finally got back to sewing about 3 weeks ago and here is what I've been working on!
It's fair time here and I have been sewing away trying to get as many entries done as I possibly could. I ended up with 10 entries total, 5 in sewing and 5 in quilts. Today was drop off day and I'm excited to head over there tomorrow afternoon to see if I won any ribbons!
Please excuse my pictures! I had everything packed up to head for the fair & I realized that I forgot to take pictures of everything. Hence, the gorgeous garbage bag backdrop!
Here are my 5 sewing entries:

First I made a doll quilt for a swap that is going on this month. It is supposed to be for doll quilts, but all of us participating are planning on using the quilt we receive as a wall hanging. Most of the ladies in the swap indicated that they prefer modern quilts. I hope this is modern enough for them! I don't have a lot of experience making modern quilts, but I love this one! The pattern is my version of "Northern Lights" by Jaybird Quilts. I made it using the 5" half hex ruler from Missouri Star Quilt Co. I am tempted to keep this & make another one for the swap, but I won't!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm linking up today, and every Friday, with Finish It Up Friday at Crazy Mom Quilts!

Not so much! Summer has caught up to me and I haven't done as much sewing as I would've liked. I'm doing the Tula Pink City Sampler Quilt Along, so I have 9 blocks to show you. I'm sewing them in "Happy Go Lucky" by Bonnie & Camille along with coordinating Kona solids. So far I'm the only one in the quilt along who is using this fabric and I'm one of the few who is using a light/flowery fabric combination. A lot of participants are using Tula Pink fabric and her style couldn't be more different from mine! See for yourself here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/citysamplerquiltalong/
First up are blocks 1-3.

I did forget my one finish for the week. I've decided to, once again, enter a few items in our fair this August. Last year I entered quilts, a sewn bag, a cloth diaper, & a girl's skirt. This year I've decided to expand my entries to include more sewn items. Yesterday's experiment was doll clothes. I bought this pattern from Kotton Candy on Etsy and whipped one up right away. I love how it turned out! I made a few small mistakes that I will correct in my final fair entry, but this one will make a lovely addition to a doll's closet. It is sized to fit an American Girl doll and is being hand-modeled by my almost 7 year old daughter.

First we have two twisters. I got the pattern for the wreath by searching at www.quiltingboard.com and I made up the other pattern. I was trying to make an Easter egg and I guess it kindof looks like one?

This is my second oldest UFO. I made the squares in May 2007 in preparation for my DD's 1st birthday. I had everyone write something for her on each block. In the process of squaring up the blocks after the party, I messed something up & the rows wouldn't line up. So, I tucked it into a corner and left it there. Until now! It still isn't perfect, but at least it's done! Just in time for her to turn 7 in June!

This is my current work in progress and my oldest UFO! I think I started making this in the spring of 2004 as an Easter gift for my Mom. I got as far as cutting the pieces out and then it got tucked away. It has lived in 3 different houses and I plan on having it move on to it's 4th house (my Mom's!) by next week.

I also didn't have a ton of time to quilt during the last couple of months of the school year. Our homeschool year ended last Friday, so I can get back to my love of quilting! Here are a few things I've finished recently. I'm participating in a UFO contest at my LQS, so I'm trying to get as many of my UFOs completed as I can by the end of the year. I'm making pretty good progress!
First up is a Mod Circles baby quilt. I started this in the winter/spring of 2012 and I finished it at the end of April. I have no idea who it will belong to, but for now it will sit in my "finished" pile.

Next is a quilt that I didn't piece, but I quilted & bound. This quilt was hand pieced by my Grandma. We don't know for sure when she made it, but I finally finished it just last week. I love how it turned out! I can't imagine doing all of that hand stitching!

I made this penguin pillow for my oldest DS, age 9, who adores penguins. Each of my kids has one of these pillows now. I need to get pics of the other 2.

I made this lap quilt for my Mom for Mother's Day this year. She has admired the quilt on our bed for quite some time, but the fabric was out of print and I couldn't find any more. I came across these charm packs by the same designer (Moda's Holly Taylor) at my LQS and I knew they were just meant for my Mom! She loves it!

I made this table runner for my Mother-in-Law for Mother's Day. She loves kokopelli & her dining room is almost the same color as this fabric. I figured she could use it on her kitchen island. She loved it as well!

We had a blast shopping and having lunch. We ended up going to Hobby Lobby so I could get a little fabric to go with some fabrics I'd like to use. I ended up with 5 1/2 yds of Kona cotton solids. I'm always in need of the colors "white" and "snow", but this time I ended up with a few brights as well. They are purple, jade green, bright pink, and an orange that I can't remember what the name is. I think it's tangerine? Anyway, the bright colors go with some fabric I won from Kate Spain's blog last summer. I want to make something fun with it and the focus fabric in that line has those 4 colors plus a bunch more. Kate Spain's fabric is never dull or boring! Pics will have to wait until my computer and I are getting along again.
Our couch pillows still had Christmas covers on them, so I needed to get them changed! I decided to go with a Valentine's Day theme this time, which gives me another month to figure out what fabric I want to use for the covers that will be on the pillows until September. I have 3 very large pillow covers on the cutting table, so I hope to share those in a day or two.
My stash report so far looks like this:

Fabric purchased this year: 3 1/4 yards
Fabric used this year: 4 1/8 yards
Total for 2013: -7/8 yard !!!

I've also spent a little bit of my spare time trying to crochet something other than dishcloths. This baby hat turned out pretty well and now belongs to my daughter's baby doll.
I was doing well on avoiding temptation until I went to the LQS's preview party this past Saturday. I found some "Sunkissed" fabric in the clearance room and it just had to come home with me! I already have some of that fabric for a quilt and I figured more was better. I ended up with 3 1/4 yards in a mixture of yardage and FQ's. I already put it in my stash with the rest of what I had, so I don't have a pic of it to share. (Here is a link to the pdf of the prints at Moda: http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_Sunkissed.pdf ) I am making my quilt out of just the orange, yellow & green fabrics. No pink or gray here!

I don't feel so bad about adding to my stash since I've already sewn some this year! I made my Mom a bucket bag for her birthday. (http://www.michellepatterns.com/product/bucket-bag-pdf-sewing-pattern) I made it out of denim and used Kona cotton in navy for the lining. I forgot to take a pic of it before I wrapped it, so I'll have to get a pic of it when I go to visit her later this week. It used 1 1/4 yards, so stash is ahead for the year, but not by much.
I've been quilting and sewing a lot this summer and I've wanted to have a place to share what I've made. I finished my most recent quilt this weekend. It's for a family friend who was diagnosed with cancer this summer. I really hope she loves it and it brings her warmth and comfort as she goes through treatment.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The pattern is "Picnic Time" from the book "Simple Style: Easy Weekend Quilts" by Sara Diepersloot. In the book, the quilt is made using a watermelon print fabric with red, black and green accents. I decided to go a totally different direction and used tones of berry-ish purple with a batik, 2 semi-solids and a solid (Kona in berry). I tend to use a lot of solids in my quilt, so the semi-solids were a new thing for me.

Thanks for letting me share my creation. Hopefully my future posts will be more put together than this one!

P.S.
I told you this was trial & error! The pics of this quilt were posted first directly from Flickr before I posted this post. Can anyone tell me how to include Flickr pics in my posts? I will be forever grateful!Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14686579480283951489noreply@blogger.com0
